    最近の研究テーマ

    我々は、液体中に浮遊した「微粒子」の研究をしています。対象とする大きさは、マイクロメートル(髪の毛の太さ程度)から、数十ナノメートル(1億分の1メートル)と非常に小さく、構造も、ポリマーを被覆した粒子や、その中に機能性分子を詰め込んだマイクロカプセルなど実に様々です。取り扱っている材料は、固体粒子の分散系(微粒子を含んだ液体)、エマルション(水と油の液滴)、マイクロバブルまで多彩です。これらの機能性粒子は、医薬品や化粧品、塗料など実社会で活用されており、さらに次世代の自動車バッテリーやコンピュータ基盤の部品の原料として、大きな注目を集めています。実際、メーカーとタイアップした研究活動も多く展開しています。

      

    研究室の1番大きな特徴は、微粒子のユニークな特性や構造を研究するために、微粒子懸濁液を作ること(重合)に加えて、それを見るための技術を「独自に開発」している点にあります。これまでの問題点を克服する手法を根本から考え直し、今ままで「不可能であると考えられてきた」ことを可能にしました。具体的には、エコー診断で赤ちゃん(センチメートル)を見るために使われている超音波を新しい観点で活用し、ナノ粒子(ナノメートル)を観ることを試みました。

    2008年、高度に着色した微粒子懸濁液を、試料を希釈・乾燥せず、そのままの状態で見る超音波法(高周波動的超音波散乱)を開発しました。化学系の研究室でありながら、物理系の研究も行ってきたわけです。この技術を使って世界で初めて着色したナノメートル構造体を動的に見ることに成功しました。これまでの研究では、光やレーザーを使った技術が一般的となっていました。ところが実際の材料の多くは光を透過しないものが多く、インクや化粧品、さらには実用の濃厚な微粒子溶液など、光を通さない材料は、その分析が非常に困難と考えられてきました。それゆえ、この分野では、基礎学術的解明を目指す大学の研究と、世の中で本当に必要とされていることが必ずしも合致しないことがありました。我々は「実社会で貢献」できること意識しながら、かつ、濃厚系における粒子の集合体としての興味深い新しい「学問的知見」を得るために、全く新しいスタイルで研究を展開することを考えました。

    なぜ今までできなかったのか?これには現代のデジタル社会、高性能なコンピューター社会が発達した恩恵があります。超音波の特徴は、光と比べて伝搬が遅いことです。このことが逆に利点となって、超音波の伝播の一部始終を記録できます。最近の大容量メモリーがあるからこそこの豊富な情報が処理できるわけで、この他にも今だからできることや、盲点がまだまだ潜んでいるかもしれませんね。
